I have a 10 week old mini and I am wondering what to expect as far as growth. At what age do most minis reach there adult weight? He was 2lbs when we got him and he has already gained a little over half a pound. Does this sound normal? We are guessing he will weigh around 8 lbs full grown because his mom was 7 1/2 lbs and his dad 9 lbs and he was smaller than his brother. Also, how much should I expect him to be eating at his age? He eats about 1/2 cup a day right now. Any insight from more experienced mini owners would be great.

My dachshund was in heat about 50 days ago…we had to board her and our male dachshund one day and they promised to keep them seperate but we are afraid they did not. A few weeks ago her nipples started to become larger and yesterday we noticed that her tits are getting larger also. In addition her stomach is starting to feel a little swollen and hard. I have been reading things about how dachshunds are prone to false pregnancies…is there any way to tell if it is a false pregnancy or do we just need to take her to the vet for a blood test?

We just got our new Dachshund puppy from the breeder (Tucker, 8 weeks old).  He is very well socialized and great around people and other dogs. When we put him in his play pen or the crate he whines for long times until somebody comes around to pay attention to him.  We are trying not to give in to the whining to allow him to learn to be alone.  He does do OK over night.  He sleeps in his crate in our bedroom and sleeps well and for quite a few hours before he needs to go potty. How can we make this easier on him and us?

Hi all,

I’m looking to get a couple dachshund puppies.

I’d prefer to get 2 females, as male dogs (in general) tend to try my patience… However, I will be picking the puppies based solely on personality so getting a male is not out of the question.

I’ve only personally had larger breeds in the past (Black Lab, Norwegian Elk Hound/Wolf mix, Doberman, mutt/coyote mix) and found that although males are often more playful and “fun”, they also tend to have ZERO attention span and are just kinda dumb in general — harder to train, more destructive if not constantly entertained, peeing on things all the time…

Are there specific gender traits with Dachshunds? Do girls tend to be more stubborn/hard to train, etc?

I’m not wanting to breed or show the dachshunds, I just really love crazy weiner dogs! My dogs will definitely be “fixed” onec they are old enough for the surgery.  I’d certainly prefer the short haired/smooth breed and coloration is largely unimportant, but long hair are not out of the question.
I was hoping somebody could recommend good, reliable breeders with a history of quality dogs in the Colorado area.

The AKC site really doesn’t have as much info as I hoped and the local club site is a disappointment as well.

Additionally, I am intending to crate train the puppies. Would it be better to get a separate crate for each or a larger crate for both of them to share?

Thanks in advance!

My 9 month old red smooth mini dachshund seems to like to mouth people’s hands/fingers during play. I’ve tried making a loud “yelp” and crossing my arms and turning my back to her when she does this, but as soon as I engage in play again she wants to mouth my hands. I’ve also noticed she does this when we pet her. She has lots of toys and loves to chew on them. Thank goodness she doesn’t chew on furniture. We broke her of that habit early on with “apple bitters”. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to “break” her from mouthing?

Hi everyone!

this is the first time I have ever tried to housebreak a puppy. I got my dachshund puppy exactly one week ago, at 8 weeks old. I was wondering what method everyone has used to housebreak their dachshund puppy, is 8 weeks is too young for me to expect him to be housebroken, and how long it took for your dachshund to learn to do its business outside?

i take him out several times a day to do his business, and he does but he seems unpredictable. He is VERY distracted, not yet leash trained, and plays a bit first. I tried to make sure i take him out after every meal but he is so unpredictable that sometimes he goes #2 even up to 3 hours after he has a meal!

when i’m at school for hours at a time or at night he is in a pen with a pee pee pad. he goes #1 on the peepee pad, and rarely #2 (only usually once in the middle of the night) until i take him outside. It seems like he doesn’t seem to know he should try and potty when i take him outside, unless by coincidence he needed to go at that moment. i dont know if hes really learning or if i’m on the right track! any suggestions for someone that needs to be gone for hours during the day? will he be easier to housebreak once he is a bit older?

thank you!! :)

Hello all,

My husband and I are considered taking our mini doxie with us to Kansas for Christmas.  I’d like to get your comments on what carrier you have/like for airline travel?  This is our first dog and want him to be comfortable on the ride… I’d like to find something that we can bring him into the cabin with us instead of putting him in the cargo hold.  I was looking at this one Snoozer Roll Around in the medium size.  Our pup will be 10 months in December but right now he’s already 12lbs. at 5months. Any help you can give would be awesome. Thanks so much.-Erika

Hello everyone,
I’m having some trouble deciding which type of crate to use for training my Bindi when she comes home with me next month (born July 2 @ www.utahdoxies.com if you’re curious/bored).

I would normally just get a plastic airline-type crate but my live-in fiancee won’t have it because she thinks they are too ugly and dark on the inside. Her solution is a Noz2Noz crate, like this one specifically:
collapsible dog crate

My main fear with this crate is that my pup will chew it to shreds. I am hopeful that if I keep her interested with a Kong and some other interesting toys, she’d be ok in it. Has anyone on here had any experience with this type of crate?
Thanks in advance.

My miniature longhaired dachshund, Monty, finally passed his tests and got is certifications to be my service dog. We were originally going to participate in agility with him, but he showed the aptitude and the willingness to be trained to be my service dog.

If you are wondering his service, he is a Blood sugar dog. He is trained to alert me when my blood sugar drops too low, get help if i faint, prevent me from driving if he senses my blood sugar is too low, retrieve items (such as my insulin pack, phone, or a piece of fruit lol [he knows the difference between an apple, orange, banana, and other fruits]), dial 911 and a few other things that are escaping my mind at the moment.

Monty is 11 months old. He is a red dapple (you can’t really see his dappling because of his vest…but then again…it is hard to see dappling on red dapples in general). When he was 12 weeks old, he started sensing something was wrong whenever i got a headache and he would make a sound that i only ever hear him make when I get a headache: a high pitched yelp-bark (i get often get headaches when my blood sugar starts to drop). I told this to a trainer friend of mine, and he told me about a training center near me that had a special center for Blood Sugar Dogs. They evaluated Monty and offered to train him. The result?

Only the Cutest Service Dog EVER

I have a 7 month old girl mini dachshund. She weighs about 10-11 pounds. How much do I feed her? Currently, I’ve been giving her 2/3 cup of puppy food per day. However, I’ve heard their growth slows down around 7-8 months. Should I switch to adult dog food? And how much should I give her? She isn’t very active. She takes two 10 minute walks per day and runs around the house during playtime (playing catch!).
